Empowering Youth and Inspiring Change: Celebrating Our Stars at the Volunteer Appreciation Event
On August 9th, the energy at the Flato Markham Theatre was nothing short of electric. As your MC for the afternoon, looking out from the stage at a packed lower section of over 400 community members, families, and youth was an unforgettable experience. We gathered for one shared purpose: to celebrate the extraordinary individuals who dedicate their time, energy, and passion to making a difference.

At York Region Educational Services (YRES), our mission is to empower youth ages 12–30 through meaningful volunteer opportunities, mentorship, training, and skill development. Having the front-row seat to honor more than 150 star volunteers was deeply inspiring, showing just how powerful youth-driven service can be.
Here is a look back at an incredible afternoon dedicated entirely to community, leadership, and volunteer impact.
Honouring Our Volunteers: From Grassroots to Leadership
Volunteers are the absolute foundation of everything we do. This annual celebration brings our entire community together to recognize their contributions and spark continued service.

This year, awards were presented across four distinct categories to celebrate impact at every stage:
Junior Star Volunteer: Awarded to volunteers ages 8–14 demonstrating early dedication to community and social causes.
Youth Star Volunteer: Awarded to volunteers ages 15–29 showing strong commitment to social causes and positive change.
Master Star Volunteer: Awarded to volunteers ages 30+ who inspire others through lasting community service.
Team Star Volunteer: Awarded to dedicated groups showing outstanding collaboration, creativity, and collective impact.
I also had the privilege of introducing two of our inspiring Star Volunteer Speakers:
Vihaan: Joined YRES last year and became the youngest person ever to complete our Volunteer Success Program, continuing to support YRES across projects big and small.
Seymour: Joined YRES earlier this year, completing his training at lightning speed to support our Volunteer Fair and summer camps.
Words of Inspiration & Special Guests
Throughout the program, our project leadership and guest speakers highlighted the profound ripple effect that volunteerism creates across York Region.
Mariam, our Project Lead, reflected on the milestone:
"It was an honour to lead and organize an event dedicated to celebrating the incredible volunteers who give their time, passion, and energy to our community. Welcoming over 150 star volunteers and more than 400 guests made this celebration truly special. Seeing volunteers recognized and awarded for their hard work was a proud moment for our entire team. This event was a reminder that behind every successful initiative is a group of dedicated individuals who choose to make a difference."
We were also honoured to share a warm message from Hon. Tim Hodgson, P.C., M.P. for Markham–Thornhill:
"To all the youth being recognized today, thank you for your dedication and commitment to serving others. Your efforts make a difference. Please accept my best wishes for a successful event and for your continued success in all future endeavours!"

"This event was a great reminder of how much goes into building a strong and connected community. Volunteers give so much through their time, dedication, and generosity, and it was wonderful to have the opportunity to celebrate and recognize them. I’m grateful to have been part of making this celebration happen and to celebrate the people who make such a difference in our community."
The Team Behind the Scenes

From my vantage point at the microphone, I got to watch an incredible team execute a complex event behind the scenes. An event hosting 400+ guests requires seamless collaboration, and a huge thank you goes out to every crew that made the afternoon run like clockwork:
Sign-In Team: Adapted quickly to handle the massive rush at registration and kept lines moving smoothly.
AV Team: Managed slides, microphones, and cues so the entire production sounded and looked crisp from start to finish.
Usher Team: Coordinated seating and guided hundreds of guests throughout the theatre effortlessly.
Backstage & Refreshments Team: Worked behind the scenes on event logistics, stage timing, and keeping refreshments stocked.
Volunteer & CSJ Coordination: Kept all event volunteers and CSJs organized and supported throughout the entire day.
Marketing Team: Spearheaded outreach and promotion to ensure the theatre was packed with supporters.
General Support Team: Handled booth setups, teardown, logistics, and everything in between.
