York Region Educational Services (YRES) was honoured to welcome The Honourable Tim Hodgson, Member of Parliament for Markham–Thornhill and Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, to the YRES office for a visit. During his time with the organization, Minister Hodgson met with the YRES team to learn more about its programs, initiatives, and commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for young people across York Region.

The visit provided an opportunity to showcase several of YRES’ signature initiatives and the impact they have on students, youth, and families in the community. Minister Hodgson explored the LEGO Robotics Program, where students develop coding, engineering, problem-solving, and teamwork skills through hands-on STEM learning. He also learned more about YRES’ broader efforts to support young people through educational opportunities, community programs, and initiatives designed to help them succeed.

Minister Hodgson also learned about YRES' annual Back-to-School Drive (B2S), an initiative dedicated to helping students begin the school year with confidence by providing essential school supplies to students and families in need. The program reflects YRES' ongoing commitment to ensuring every student has access to the resources they need to succeed academically.

In addition, the visit showcased the impact of YRES' Volunteer Success Program, where over 3,000 youth have gained valuable leadership, communication, and organizational skills while giving back to their community across Canada. Through volunteer opportunities, participants not only support local initiatives but also build lifelong skills that prepare them for future academic and career success.

He also met with the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) youth participants. CSJ participants Jeff and Alex shared how the program has helped them gain valuable work experience, leadership skills, and opportunities to make a positive impact through community service. 

YRES is grateful to Minister Hodgson for taking the time to visit our team, learn about our programs, and engage with the young people we serve. We look forward to continuing our work to inspire young learners, support families, and create opportunities for youth across York Region and beyond.
